When the primary objective for children is to fit into being a good student and to get good grades, we have no choice but to teach to their deficits. When I was in school, it felt like majority of my teachers were looking for my deficits and teaching to that. Strengths in this system of assessment become downplayed as the weaknesses take center stage. When children are free to pursue their interests, we can focus on their strengths. And, more often than not, a celebrated child, a child who knows you are rooting for them and see them as a genius who is capable of changing the world, will have the capacity to address their own deficits. This will not happen as long as we teach to their weaknesses.
How do we discover every child's strengths, help them find their passion, to reveal their joy, and embrace their sweetness?
"What you focus on grows, what you think about expands, and what you dwell upon determines your destiny."
